IMG_6300Recent snowfall this spring has come in super light and with no wind. This lead to conditions where the new snow was not bonding to the older snow surface. Recent wind, warm temps and springtime sunshine have created smooth sliding surfaces. This couloir I chose to approach from the other side and manage top down.IMG_6305

Meaning that I knew that there was a good chance the new snow wouldn’t stay in place so i chose to put in a ski cut turn at the top to test it out.

As you can see the slab released and traveled quickly, billowing as it carried down the mountain. Probably enough to catch and carry you, choosing appropriate terrain can help mitigate risk.IMG_6318
